Is physiotherapy covered by Dutch health insurance?

Yes physiotherapy is often (partly or fully) covered, depending on your insurance package.

  • Physiotherapy is not included in the basic insurance for most adults
  • Many expats have supplementary insurance that covers multiple sessions per year
  • Chronic conditions may be covered from the basic insurance after a medical indication. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to check your coverage before or after your first visit.
What if I don’t have Dutch health insurance?

No problem. You can pay privately.

  • Clear, transparent pricing
  • No hidden costs
  • You’ll receive an invoice that you can submit to your international insurer (if applicable)
Do I need to pay upfront?

In most cases:

  • Insurance patients → we invoice your insurer directly
  • Private patients → payment after the session (PIN or online)
Is there an excess (eigen risico) for physiotherapy?

Usually no. Physiotherapy from supplementary insurance does not affect your excess. If physiotherapy is covered from basic insurance (chronic indication), excess may apply, we’ll explain this clearly if relevant.

Access to Care & Referrals

Do I need a GP referral?

No. In the Netherlands you have direct access to physiotherapy.

You can:

  • Book an appointment yourself
  • Start treatment immediately
  • Skip the GP unless there are medical red flags

This is one of the biggest differences compared to many other countries.

Can I see a physiotherapist even if I’m new to the Netherlands?

Absolutely. Many of our patients are:

  • Newly relocated
  • Temporary residents
  • International students or professionals

No BSN yet? No problem, we’ll help you get started.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We usually offer:

  • Same-week appointments
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Easy online booking or WhatsApp contact
Do you speak English?
Yes, all treatments and communication can be fully in English. Several of our therapists have international experience and work with expats daily.
