How physiotherapy is covered by health insurance in the Netherlands
The Dutch healthcare system can be confusing when you’re new to the Netherlands, especially when it comes to insurance and reimbursements. The good news: physiotherapy is well organised and often (partly) covered by health insurance. Everyone in the Netherlands has a basic health insurance (basisverzekering), which covers essential medical care such as GP and hospital visits. Physiotherapy for adults is usually not included in this basic insurance.
That’s why many people choose an additional insurance package (aanvullende verzekering). These packages often cover a set number of physiotherapy sessions per year. Coverage depends on your insurer and policy. A key difference compared to many countries: you don’t need a GP referral. You can book an appointment with a physiotherapist directly.
On this page, we explain how reimbursements work for expats and how we help you check your coverage so there are no surprises.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Basic insurance (basisverzekering)
The standard Dutch health insurance does NOT cover physiotherapy for adults.
Exceptions:
Chronic conditions (from an official list)
After certain surgeries
Long-term rehabilitation
If this applies to you, your insurer will inform you.
Supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering)
Most expats choose an additional package that does cover physiotherapy.
This usually includes:
6 to 40 sessions per year (depending on plan)
Full or partial reimbursement
No deductible
